Set Sail with me to the 12 Writing Strategies Islands

Have you heard of the 12 Writing Strategies Islands?  No? Well let me share with you what I have learnt about these islands in my LIT class this week.

I have learnt that the 12 Writing Strategies Islands go hand in hand with the writing process. You remember the writing process don’t you? If not let me jog your memory with this picture.

LET'S SET SAIL

The island of Narrowing
On this island, it is responsible for management. This island is quite the same as the writing strategy NARROWING. writers narrow or limit their ideas so that it is more specific and manageable. This is done by using the 5 "W" (who, what, where, why, when).

                                                                                                                                               The island of Focus

On the island of focus, its' people are responsible for creating a list of that should be achieved at the end of the process. This island can be compared with the writing strategy - SETTING OF GOALS
This strategy allows writers to create a list of goals that they would like to achieve after writing their piece.

The name of the island says it all. This island reminds me of another writing strategy called GENERATING. This strategy allows writers to collect ideas, words and phrases. Writers generate ideas by collecting information about their topic through research.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The island of Addition
After the generating of the main ideas, the island is responsible for adding details. The island of addition resembles the writing strategy ELABORATION. At this stage the writers expounds on his/her ideas by adding specific details. The writer does this through brainstorming.

The island of Organization
On this island, the people organize materials in a sequence, groups or priority. Like the island of Organization, writers too must ORGANIZE their ideas in the order of events and paragraphing.. To do this writers sometimes use graphic organizers.

                                                                             The island of Detection
The people of this island are responsible for detecting if there are any errors and mistakes. The island of Detection can be compared with the writing strategy PROOFREADING. At this stage, writers reread their work to detect spelling and other conventional errors.

The island of Progression and Coordination
The island of Progression and coordination sees that everything goes well. Just like in writing, writers must MONITOR their progress and be able to coordinate their writing strategies. Writers do this by rereading of rough drafts and receiving feedback from their teachers.
                                                                                                                                                         The island of Arrangement
The people of this island are responsible for the layout and arrangements. When compared to writing, the island of Arrangement reminds of the writing strategy of FORMATTING. This strategy allow writers to change and adjust the layout of their final writing piece.

The island of Examination
Before the finished product can move to the next step it s examined. The island of Examination can be compared to the writing strategy, REREADING. This strategy give writers the opportunity to check for achievement of goals and the flow of ideas.

The island of Many Questions
The name of the island speaks for itself as we all know what are questions. The island of Many questions can be compared to the writing strategy QUESTIONING. This strategy allows writer to question themselves as they develop their writing piece. Writers do this by asking self - questions to help guide their thinking while writing.

                                                                    The island Revision
On this island, its' people are responsible for the revision of the almost finished product.  Just like like in writing, writers REVISE their work. During this strategy writers delete or add words and sentences. They also may rearrange the text so that their ideas will flow.

The island of Review
The people of this island reviews and judge whether or not the goals set were achieved. This island is quite similar to the writing strategy known as EVALUATION. Writers use this strategy to determine whether or not the goals they set were achieved.

I hope that you have enjoyed your trip with us and your willing to set sail with us again. Now that I have shared the 12 Writing Strategies Islands with you go and share with someone else so they too can share your experience.

  1. Mohanie, this week's blog entry is definitely very creative as you took each strategy and created an island. It is interesting to note that each of these strategies can be tied to one of the stages in the writing process. This just proves that writing is spiral and that all of the ideas and concepts are connected. I look forward to introducing my students to the 'people on these islands' once I return to the classroom.
    Good Job!

  4. Very creative way of using the strategies to teach writing. I appreciate how you have linked the islands with the steps in the writing process so that we can see the connection clearly. I hope I'll be able to use them all with my own child and my class to some extent as they don't have such advanced writing skill as yet. Keep sharing so that we can all learn and benefit.
